What if it doesn't work out with my housemate/homeowner?
While we strive for perfect matches, however sometimes personalities just don't click. There's no long-term lease, so both parties can end the arrangement with short notice. It will depend on state and local laws on how much notice needs to be given, but it's generally between 10 and 30 days notice.
What are the background checks you do?
We take security very seriously. Trust is the foundation of our business.

All housemates undergo criminal, employment verification, education, and driving record checks. See the Trust & Safety Page for specifics.
Who pays for things like utilities, property taxes, and HOA fees?
Homeowners are responsible for all utilities, property taxes, and HOA fees as they would normally if a housemate was not present. The housemate may have to pay for extra services such as high speed internet, cable, or streaming services if they would like those over and above what the homeowner already has. Home Sweet Homeshare includes and estimated $250 per month to more than cover the increase in water, sewer, heat and electricity that the housemate might use. In a majority of cases, most homeowners will only see about $50 per month increase in totality across all their utilities.
Where does Home Sweet Homeshare operate?
We operate in areas where rents for a 2 bedroom are over $3,000 per month on average. This would include the urban areas in states such as California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Washington, Hawaii, and Colorado. To see specific zip codes, view this Map.
Is smoking or drinking allowed?
This is entirely up to the homeowner. We try to find a compatible match based on smoking and drinking preferences of the homeowner. Generally speaking, 85% of homeowners/housemates do not smoke so it will often take longer to match smokers.

Home Sweet Homeshare has a zero-tolerance policy for substance abuse that creates a disruptive or unsafe environment.  Contact us immediately, and we'll address the situation discreetly and take appropriate action.
How long do people usually stay in these arrangements?
To be clear, We are not Airbnb. We intend for these to be long term arrangements of 9 months or more.

The average stay is 15 months, and some last much longer! But there's no long term commitment, so it's flexible if either you or your housemate's needs change due to life circumstances.
Am I responsible for paying my housemate/homeowner directly?
Nope!  We handle all payments securely.  Your housemate's payment is transferred directly into the homeowners bank account each month via Home Sweet Homeshare - no awkward money conversations needed.
Can I have friends or family visit? How about overnight guests?
This is up to the homeowner, but generally speaking, having a friend or family member visit for a couple of hours, is acceptable to most homeowners.

However, those out of town relatives will need to stay at a hotel rather than sleep on your couch.  Yes, even if it's your mom! You'll be saving $9,600 per year, so it's better to set your mother up in an Airbnb for a long weekend that to lose out on those annual savings.

And if you have a budding new romance, it's best to go back to the other person's house rather than the homeowners.
Can I have pets?
It depends! This is entirely up to the homeowner.

Some homeowners welcome furry friends, others don't.  We recommend searching specifically for pet-friendly homes/housemates. Be upfront about your pet's breed, size, and temperament – honesty is key!

Generally speaking, having a pet will narrow down your options significantly for both homeowners and housemates, due to 30% of people having some form of allergy related to pets.
